Jakarta Slums Flood

February 17, 2010 - Leave a Response

We have released a new dvd titled “Partners in Self Reliance” for the Netherlands Red Cross and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI). About disaster risk reduction in the slums of Jakarta (Indonesia).

People living in rural areas outside Jakarta often sell their land (family heritage) to raise some capital to try and build a life in the city. It is hard to find a steady job that secures a minimal income and the migrants end up living in marginal areas, often in slums or along the water canals or riverbed. Every year, many areas of the city, especially the canals and riverbed flood. The rapidly changing climate (more rainfall) and rising sealevel have influenced this yearly cycle of flooding and every year the situation becomes worse. These people do not have a ‘culture of saving’, so when a flood comes, they loose all their property and have to start over again. A flood also means that many slum dwellers fall victim to drowning and (viral/contageous) diseases such as Malaria and Dengue. The Red Cross has set up a program to train people how to rescue victims and save lives. Together with Rabobank Foundation and Eureko Achmea Foundation, the Red Cross has also set up a microfinance program based on community based savings&loans. This way, people living in slums areas are better equipped to deal with floodings.

Illiteracy Senegalese Women

May 1, 2009 - Leave a Response

A short introduction about howeducation and microfinance programmes help women gain independence and become self reliant.

For ICCO, we produced and shot a short documentary film about microfinance and literacy in Senegal in a small desert village outside Dakar. Young men leave their remote home villages to make some money in the city. Women stay behind. ICCO supports a program that educates women (economics, language, mathematics) and organizes small loans to set up small enterprises to make them more self reliant.

Victorian Music

February 1, 2005 - Leave a Response

Our first production was a documentary about a Victorian musical instrument called ‘concertina’.

We produced and shot this film in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands. The concertina was originally developped as a classical instrument but became known as a folk instrument during the Folk Revival in the 1960s and is often associated with Sea Shanties and Parisian Cafes. The film explores the various music styles and history of the concertina.
